Halloween Day in Hong Kong

201001043 So Young NA

A week before October 31st in Hong Kong, children and their parents are busy planning how to spend their Halloween Day. As I attended American International School in Hong Kong, my family was naturally influenced by American culture. Therefore, although we were living in an Asian city Hong Kong, we also participated and enjoyed Halloween Day in our own ways by decorating our house with pumpkins, preparing customs, and doing trick-or-treat.

Whenever we face holidays such as Christmas or Halloween Day, we always started by decorating our house. For Halloween Day, my family always made Jack-o’-Lantern and decorated me and my brother’s rooms. Jack-o’-Lantern is the Halloween pumpkin which is the significant symbol of Halloween Day. Making Jack-o’-lantern is not difficult at all. First, we bought few candles and big and round pumpkins in order to make it into a scary ‘Jack of the Lantern.’ Then we used spoons or ladles to scrape out inner contents of the pumpkin until it required enough space. At last, we carved a scary face on the pumpkin and placed a candle inside. That is how we made Jack-o’-lanterns.

The next step for Halloween Day is preparing a nice and cool-looking customs. Before buying or making a custom, we must decide the character we are going to dress up. When me and my brothers were even younger, we were crazy about Harry Potter so we loved to dress up as a Hogwarts students, but as we grew up we were more fond of Scream, Frankenstein or Wicked the witch. A big black blanket to wear as a cloak was a must-have item for every children. Then, parents would help children do make-up or buy a proper mask to fit into their own characters.

The best and the most exciting part of Halloween is ‘trick-or-treat.’ Once we are fully dressed up with costumes, we met up with other friends at an appointed time and place in order to begin trick-or-treat. With the list of address of friends’ home, we visited them and yelled ‘trick or treat!’ Then parents from each house came out and greeted us warmly with candies and chocolates. When the play is finished, everyone gathered up again to have a small candy party.

Although we are old enough now to skip Halloween Day, looking back, it was a unique and special experience for Koreans to enjoy American culture in city of Hong Kong. Not knowing what Halloween is really about, under parent’s love and support, me and my brother spent happy and joyful Halloween Day and built up good childhood memories with other friends.
