Hae Sook Yoon, Assignment 2. Holidays, Tuesday 11.a.m class.

201302209 Haesook Yoon Assignment 2. Holidays.

 Happy New Year!

Korea has its own New Year's Day which is called Seol-nal. The date of Seol-nal is counted with the lunar calendar. On this holiday the whole family gathers around and celebrates the first day of New Year. Families spend the holiday together and do special things.

Usually, the holiday starts from a day before Seol-nal and ends the day after. The day before Seol-nal families meet all together at grandparents' house and prepare for the first day of New Year. On Seol-nal people do ancestor memorial rites. For the rites, women make traditional foods and men clean the house to welcome the New Year. Because the foods that are set on the table are so many, these days some people buy the foods from markets.

In the morning of Seol-nal, the first thing people would do is to do ancestor rites. Women decorate and prepare for ancestors. Men wear traditional full dress and do the rite. Koreans believe that during the rite the spirit of our ancestors come and enjoy what we have prepared for them. After the rite, people go to their ancestors' graves. They clean and do the simple version of rite at the grave. Then they can eat the breakfast. For breakfast, it is tradition to eat 'ddoekguk', the rice-cake soup.

After breakfast, people share well-wishes with each other. Sharing wishes is one of the common behaviors that Koreans love to do in national holidays. When children bow and say greetings, the adults give back the greeting with some money. My dad loves to see his relatives so I've been to other villages and earned a lot of money on that year.

Seol-nal, the day of celebrating the first day of New Year is a big holiday in Korea. On Seol-nal we do a rite to remember our ancestors, go to the graves and clean them and share well-wishes with each other. Seol-nal is a very important holiday not just because it is the first day of the year but also because it gathers family member who we rarely see each other.

Hello Hae-sook!! How is your weekend so far? I hope you are enjoying the warm weather.
I read your essay and decided to give you some comments:)
    So here are my comments!

    1. I think your thesis lacks signals that can tell the readers that this is going to be a process essay. By including certain words like steps or stages, your readers would be able to know what to expect in the following paragraphs.

    2. I think you have included some background information in your introduction, but your first body paragraph has more details which would be better if they were mentioned in the introduction.

    3. Each of your paragraphs does not present a different part of the process, but seems like a continuation of explaining what occurs on the day of Seol-nal.

    4. The parts of the process are organized in a logical sequence by utilizing a chronological order. You first explained what occurs on the day before Seol-nal, and then you went on to explain what happens in the morning of the actual holiday.

    5. Your body paragraphs include various information, but you could include more details and personal examples to further support your paragraphs.
For example, in the first body paragraph, the readers would find your writing more interesting if you included descriptions of certain Seol-nal food that Koreans like to eat on this day. Also, in the second body paragraph, more description about the ddoekguk would have helped readers who have not tried this food understand it better. Finally, on the last body paragraph, I would have loved to read more about your personal experience of collecting money on Seol-nal.

    6. You have forgotten to include a final recommendation or warning in the conclusion. Maybe you could write a few tips on how to enjoy Seol-nal to foreigners visiting South Korea.

Thank you for such a lovely essay about our traditional holiday and I will see you next week! Bye

Hello, Hae Sook Yoon :) I really enjoyed your essay and here are my comments.
    1. What I like about this piece of writing is that your essay is really well-organized. You explained traditional activities of Seol-nal in a chronological order and it made your essay really easy and clear to understand.
    2. Your main point seems to be that Seol-nal is one of the most important Korean holidays because people gather around with their family members and spend valuable time together.
    3. This sentence struck me as powerful: "My dad loves to see his relatives so I've been to other villages and earned a lot of money on that year." You shared your personal experience and it was interesting.
    4. Everything was really clear and easy to understand.
    5. One change you could make would make the biggest improvement is that it would have been much better if you included more personal experience or anecdotes. You can talk about your actual experience about this special holiday.

1)"Families spend the holiday together and do special things." This is the thesis, however it does not really inform the process to the readers.

2)The writer includes some background information that mentions Sol nal is a lunar new year and families gather.

    3) Yes the paragraph has a different part of the process.

4)The essay is in a sequential order starting with going to the house of the grandparents, then the women make food as the men clean. The next process was the ancestral rite, then eat, then make the wishes.

5)Yes there were details and fact like that sharing wishes were something Koreans love to do.

6)Yes the writer does include a evaluation that says this festival is important as it bring families who rarely see each other together.

Because the foods that are set on the table are so many, these days some people buy the foods from markets. Our family still makes the foods. Especially making dumpling is a big step done before the rite. People say that a woman will have a pretty baby if she makes a good-looking dumpling.

Ddoekguk is made with ddoek and the dumplings women made before. Eating ddoekguk on Soel-nal usually means getting a year older.
After breakfast, people share well-wishes with each other. Sharing wishes is one of the common behaviors that Koreans love to do in national holidays. When children bow and say greetings, the adults give back the greeting with some money. My dad loves to see his relatives so I’ve been to other villages and earned a lot of money on that year. I was quite surprised that my grandmother’s mother is still alive and even healthy.
