Jinling Tian/ Assignment 2 / Tuesday 11 a.m

Spring Festival Dinner

Last Spring Festival, my family and I made dumplings one of the most traditional dishes in China.

On the day of Spring Festival, I went to supermarket with my mom to buy the ingredients. We bought pork, scallion, garlic, and cabbages. After arrived at home, mom and I started to make. I defrosted the pork, and then chop the meat into tiny pieces and mash them. To be more nutritional-balanced, I added cabbages that were cut into small pieces so that it would be mixed well with the minced meat. In order to make delicious stuffing for dumplings, my mom added salt, sesame oil, soy sauce, ginger, and scallions and stirred them well. After mixing the ingredients and minced meat thoroughly, two spoonful of water was added to make the stuffing juicier.

The next stop is to make wrapper of dumplings. I added half bowl of flour and then pour water slowly into the bowl. Then I mixed and kneaded them by hand to soft dough, then cover it with towel and waited four about an hour to let it ferment. Then I scattered some dry flour on the board, knead and roll it into a strip of sausage-like dough about 5 centimeters in diameter, then chopped it in to small pieces.

Here came the fun part- wrapping dumplings. I pressed each with hand and get a pancake. Finally, I held the pancake with palm and put the filling in the center and wrap it into half-moon shaped and seal edges. Then a dumpling is made.

The last step is to cook them. We put the dumplings into boiling water. When the water is boiled, the dumplings are ready to be served. However, before eating, soy sauce, vinegar, and sesame oil or pepper oil were needed to suit our tastes. We had a wonderful reunion in Spring Festival by making and eating dumplings together.

Hello, Jinling Tian. I really enjoyed your essay :) and here are my comments.
    1. What I like about this piece of writing is that you provided specific details for every step of dumpling making. You explained every step in a easy and detailed way and I could even imagine making dumpling myself.
    2. Your main point seems to be that your family made traditional dumpling together and had a wonderful reunion in Spring Festival by making and eating dumplings together.
    3. These particular words or lines struck me as powerful is your last sentence: "We had a wonderful reunion in Spring Festival by making and eating dumplings together." It effectively wraps up the main idea of your essay.
    4. Every step was really clear and easy to understand.
    5. One change you could make would make the biggest improvement is that it would have been much better if you provided historical backgrounds or traditional cultures behind this dumpling making practice.

Hi, I really enjoyed reading your essay! And please let me give you my feedback^^*

    1. I think the thesis statement is “Last Spring Festival, my family and I made dumplings one of the most traditional dishes in China.” As it is mentioned that the writer cooked traditional dish called Dumplings, I could expect there will be a cooking process.

    2. As background information, it is stated that dumpling is a kind of traditional dish in China. But I think it would be even better to explain what kind of festival the “Spring Festival” is^^*.

    3. I can see a different part of the process throughout the writing. Second paragraph is about buying ingredients and making the stuffing for dumpling. Third paragraph is about making wrapper of dumpling. And in fourth paragraph, the stage of wrapping dumplings is explained. In the last paragraph, the stage of boiling dumplings and making sauce as well as family reunion is demonstrated.

    4. I think the cooking process of dumpling is organized in logical sequence. First, the ingredients must be bought from the store. Then, the ingredients are chopped and mixed for the stuffing. Next, the wrapper of dumpling is made with water and flour. After wrapping the stuffing, dumplings are boiled in water. Finally, make sauce and gather together to enjoy dumplings.

    5. I think there are some details throughout the body paragraphs about cooking dumpling. For instance, what kind of shape the dumplings look like. And I think it might be good to mention a definition that explains what kind of traditional food dumpling is, to make sure the readers who are not familiar with the food understand the dish.

    6. In the conclusion, I can see a kind of evaluation as the writer stated about a wonderful reunion in Spring Festival by making and eating dumplings together.

    1. What I like about this piece of writing is
I think the information you gave is very interesting and useful. In addition, you explained whole process using various sequence connector. That was quite impressive.

    2. Your main point seems to be
Your main point seems to be the process of making dumplings.

    3. These particular words or lines struck me as powerful
First word in the 3rd line of body 2 'kneaded' made me interesting. I've never herd of that word before and after searching it on the dictionary I thought the word is well chosen in the context.

    4. Some things aren’t clear to me. These lines or parts could be improved
The first sentence of last paragraph was awkward. You wrote that, "The last step is to cook them." However, your essay was nothing but about COOK dumplings. So I wasn't able to clearly understand what the 'cook' means.

    5. The biggest change you could make on this essay is
Your body parts were amazing because they were easy to fallow and well-organized. However, your introduction and conclusion were very weak. Introduction paragraph should have at least 5 sentences, but you only wrote one sentence, which is not considered as a paragraph. In addition, you don't actually have conclusion paragraph, because the last paragraph of your essay seemed like the fourth process of making a dumplings. It should have been a paragraph which summarizes contents and restates topic. However, I really loved reading your essay because it was about chinese food which I am interested in.
