Jae Hyun Park/causes of happiness/Tues11am

Happiness is just around the corner

There is no clear definition for happiness as it varies for everyone. For some, happiness means owning a shiny car and luxurious house while it is all about having a happy family for others. Still, we can agree on one thing: people spend their whole lives searching for it. Many people lament that happiness just seems too far away. However, the causes of happiness are not too hard to spot. In fact, they come down to three simple but powerful factors: achievement, love, and having fun.

There is nothing more thrilling than achieving your goals. These goals do not necessarily have to be big; they can be as little as finishing an essay by midnight. After restraining yourself from procrastinating, agonizing over which word to use, and reading through the whole essay for editing, the essay is finally ready for submission. At that very moment you accomplish your goal, the feeling of satisfaction runs through your whole body and you couldn't feel more proud of yourself. Self improvement and a sense of achievement that come from reaching your goals can bring pure bliss.

Love is another cause of contentment. Life is all about relationships and interactions. People feel a sense of belonging by communicating and socializing with others. Hence, we all want to express love to those we cherish and be loved by them. When you are down and your friend tries his best to make you laugh, you feel thankful and blessed. When your friend tells you that he got the job he wanted, you also feel excited and happy. In other words, people find pleasure in building a close relationship with others and sharing love.

There is no doubt that having fun leads to having a peace of mind. What better way to surround yourself with positive vibes than having a wonderful time with people you love? You would be laughing endlessly, relieving all your stress, and making unforgettable memories. When people spend time doing what they love, they do not have a single second to be depressed. Nobody knows when his last day on Earth would be; it might be tomorrow or even worse, tonight. That being said, if you want some joy in your life, enjoy yourself; and it will naturally come to you.

Now that the causes of happiness are revealed, all you have to do is put them into practice. Never stop setting goals in your life because a sense of achievement will always brighten you up. Share as much love as possible; it is like a magic spell that will make you and your loved ones smile. Last but not the least, enjoy every moment of your life. Having fun is something you will never regret, not in a million years. In this way, you will find that your life is full of laughter and contentment. Happiness is just around the corner.

I enjoyed reading your essay and I agree with your thoughts on the causes of happiness. I liked the part that says " if you want some joy in your life, enjoy yourself; and it will naturally come to you."

    1. Thesis Statement :In fact, they come down to three simple but powerful factors: achievement, love, and having fun.
    2. Topic sentence: each body paragraph does contain a topic sentence that defines a specific cause. Achievement, love and having fun
    3. The causes are explained in a logical way. The writer elaborates on its causes by providing its effects.
    4. The writer uses connectors such as however, hence, in other words..
    5. The writer concludes by restating the causes.
    6. The writer suggests his own way of pursueing happiness.

    1. I think thesis statement is 'In fact, they come down to three simple but powerful factors: achievement, love, and having fun'.

    2. Yes, I think each body paragraph has a topic sentence, 'Self improvement and a sense of achievement that come from reaching your goals can bring pure bliss' in the first paragraph, and 'Love is another cause of contentment' in the second paragraph, and 'There is no doubt that having fun leads to having a peace of mind' in the last paragraph. But I think they are a little bit weak topic sentences since they are not directly connected with the happiness, so it will be great if you add some straight-forwardness in the sentences,

    3. Yes, I think the causes explained in a logical way.

    4. I couldn't see any connectors, but I don''t think it's really necessary since this essay is well-organized.

    5. 'Never stop setting goals in your life because a sense of achievement will always brighten you up', 'Share as much love as possible', 'enjoy every moment of your life' are all restate the causes.

    6. This essay ends with reflection as I wrote in no.5.

    Thank you!

Another cause of contentment is forming relationships. Humans are social animals that seek a sense of belonging from relationships with others. Hence, we like to interact with people around us and share our emotions. You go out with your friends when you are feeling excited because shared joy is double joy. You hang out with your friends when you are feeling blue because shared sorrow is half sorrow. In other words, people find pleasure in building a close relationship with others both in good times and bad times.

Suppose you are under great pressure from your upcoming presentation. What do you do to relieve your stress? You take a rest from your presentation and do something fun to fill you with positive energy. You can go for a drive with music turned up to the maximum volume and sing your lungs out. When you get exhausted, you can stop by at a place with a beautiful view and enjoy a cup of coffee. If you want some joy in your life, enjoy yourself; and it will naturally come to you.
